As a Structural Engineer, Laboratory Operations, your role is multifaceted and vital to the success of our operations. You will be the cornerstone of support for the lab managers, ensuring that day-to-day activities are aligned with our high standards and strategic goals. Your responsibilities include guiding and mentoring the lab team, fostering an environment of innovation and continuous improvement. As a key technical point of contact for engineering stakeholders, you will facilitate effective communication and collaboration between engineers, technicians, and other professionals involved in various projects.
You will take the lead in planning and executing critical research and development initiatives that enhance our product offerings and industry reputation. This includes organizing and overseeing the testing of new products or modifications to existing products, ensuring that all project milestones are met and results are aligned with our technical and business objectives.
Furthermore, you will be responsible for organizing testing for events such as symposiums and professional tours, which showcase our lab's capabilities to clients and stakeholders. These events are key opportunities to demonstrate our leadership in the industry and require meticulous planning and execution to ensure their success.
Providing engineering insights across labs involves a strategic overview of multiple projects and facilities, offering your expertise to ensure consistency and quality in all our testing procedures. You will also support labs that lack specific engineering knowledge, helping them to solve complex problems and enhance their operational capabilities.
This role is crucial not only for the effective functioning of Laboratory Operations but also for the advancement of Simpson Strong-Tie's overall mission to design and build safer, stronger structures. Your work will directly contribute to the company's reputation for excellence in engineering and innovation.
WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING (% of Time)
Technical Coordination and Support - You will oversee the coordination and vetting of all test requests, ensuring they meet our lab's standards and capabilities. Your role includes providing ongoing technical support throughout the testing process, mentoring the lab team, and facilitating the effective communication of test results to all relevant stakeholders (45%).
Project and Event Management - As a leader in special projects, you will manage the development and execution of these initiatives, from conceptualization to completion. This includes organizing and conducting tests specifically for high-visibility events such as symposiums, ensuring each project aligns with our strategic research objectives and maximizes stakeholder engagement (30%).
Inter-Laboratory Technical Support - You will provide crucial engineering insights and technical support to other labs within our organization, particularly those lacking specialized testing knowledge. Your expertise will help standardize testing procedures and elevate the overall quality of outcomes across our facilities (15%).
Research and Development Support - Engage in rigorous product investigations and the formulation of new testing protocols. Your contributions will be pivotal in advancing our laboratory's research capabilities and in driving innovation within the broader field of structural engineering (10%).
Desired Skills And Experience

- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil, Structural, or Architectural Engineering required (Master’s or Ph.D. Degree preferred).
- Experience in structural and seismic engineering, mechanical systems, hydraulic power transmission, and data acquisition preferred.
- Licensed Civil or Structural Engineer (P.E. or S.E.) preferred
- At least 3 years of experience in a technical engineering role, preferably in a laboratory setting.
- Demonstrated project management skills and the ability to coordinate multidisciplinary teams.
- Proficiency in engineering software such as AutoCAD, SAP2000, Revit, and familiarity with data acquisition systems.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.

PAY
$77,200 - $123,500 / year
