As a member of the United Association of Plumbers & Pipefitters Union, the piping detailer's role is the piping constructability and optimization mastermind. By first discovering and understanding our mechanical customer's means and methods, the piping detailer uses the power of Building Information Management (BIM) & Virtual Design & Construction (VDC) methods to pre-construct the HVAC and Process piping systems virtually, with the goal of finding and diagnosing pipe routing problems and optimize the piping system for less material waste and installation labor savings.
The Piping detailer lives "in the trenches" and thrives on overcoming technical obstacles within their path and enjoys coordinating with other trades to collaborate and work together to deliver highly coordinated and efficient design and construction projects. The Piping detailer is a skilled tradesperson and coordinates between the fabricators and the installers to ensure success, quality and accuracy of projects from start to finish by working with project documents, plans and specifications, taking field measurements and creating 3D coordination digital drawings with CAD & BIM software. The Piping detailer is driven, tenacious, technically proficient in CAD and BIM software tools, and motivated to master any additional tools to develop and communicate innovative design and construction solutions. The Piping detailer is trained, skilled, and has the expertise gained from years of field and installation experience to help us stand out from the crowd.
Primary Responsibilities
Journeyperson Detailer (Union VDC Specialist)
- Able to train, instruct and direct Apprentices according to the United Association of Plumbers & Pipefitters Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
- Redline project scope drawings
- Manage model data by exporting/importing equipment/material "Big Data" developed during redlining that will be used as a foundation to develop the VDC Project Plan, WBS, MTOs/QTOs, and to QA/QC the development of our work products and deliverables.
- BIM coordination meeting attendance and representation to communicate and offer solutions to the construction coordination team, as well as communicate barriers or obstructions in a cooperative way as to what the limitations are to rerouting or reworking ductwork systems. Prepare post-meeting action-items from detailed meeting notes to ensure timely resolution and response to coordination discussions.
- Model management and preparation using Autodesk Navisworks / Glue or other industry-recognized coordination software
- Clash-detection & clash-resolution using Autodesk Navisworks / Glue or other industry-recognized clash-detection and resolution software
- Coordinate with other project stakeholders such as clients, trades, vendors and other BIM service providers to plan, manage, and sequence construction activities
- Issue management using Autodesk BIM360 Issues or other industry-recognized issues management software
- Onsite Construction Layout familiarity with using Trimble Robotic Total Stations (RTS) or other similar RTS unit.
- Develop construction deliverables such as:
- Plan and manage development of Material/Quantity take-offs and Bill of Materials (MTOs/QTOs/BOMs) for material procurement by our clients
- Plan and manage development of Material & Equipment matrices
- Plan and manage development of Submittal (shop) drawings and details
- Plan and manage development of Installation and (pre)fabrication drawings and details
- Plan and manage development of Construction layout (Trimble) drawings
- Plan existing conditions and post-installation verification using 3D laser scanning in coordination with our Onsite Technology department
Foreperson Detailer (Union Senior VDC Specialist)
All Journeyperson Responsibilities Plus
- Able to train, instruct and direct other Journeypersons according to the to the UA Plumbers & Pipefitters CBA.
- Estimating in collaboration with the Project Manager/Production Manager (PrM) during Project Pursuit Stage.
- Proposal development in collaboration with the Project Manager (PM) during Project Pursuit Stage.
- RFI Management (including preparation) for Trade subcontractor clients
General Foreperson Detailer (Union Assistant Project Manager)
- Training, instructing and directing multiple Forepersons according to the UA Plumbers & Pipefitters CBA.
- Estimating in collaboration with the Production Manager (PrM) during Project Pursuit Stage.
- Proposal development in collaboration with the Project Manager (PM) during Project Pursuit Stage.
- RFI Management (including preparation) for Trade subcontractor clients
Position Qualifications
- Journeyperson: 5-years experience (min) installing in the building trades and 5-years detailing
- Foreperson: 5 to 10-years experience installing in the building trades and 5-years detailing
- General Foreperson: 10+ years experience installing in the building trades and 5-years detailing
