Summary
Maintain, repair, upgrade, and perform comprehensive preventative maintenance on a wide variety of electrical equipment including substations, AC and DC distribution switchgear, transformers, and relays. Also install, maintain, and repair electrical systems and equipment in Metro shops, offices, park and ride lots, transit centers, and downtown tunnel. *Applicants for positions defined as safety sensitive are required to undergo drug testing prior to employment and, subsequent to commencement of employment, will be subject to random, post accident, reasonable suspicion, return to duty, and follow up drug and alcohol testing in compliance with federal DOT alcohol and controlled substances testing program protocols. WHO MAY APPLY: This position is open to the general public. This recruitment will be used to fill one current vacancy and may be used to establish a list for future vacancies and temporary positions. WORK SCHEDULE: This position is not exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is overtime eligible. Employees in this classification must be available to work one of three shifts, staffed seven days a week. Shift picks occur once a year. Management reserves the right to assign any shift in order to meet the needs of the work unit.
Job Duties
- Perform the following duties in a safe operating condition and ensure all wiring is in compliance with existing codes and safety standards.
- Maintain and repair substation transformers, switchgear and relays. Also, install, maintain and repair electrical systems and equipment in Metro shops, offices and yards.
- Maintain all electrical wiring on Metro properties in proper working order. Includes all types of single phase and three phase circuits for lighting and power with voltages up to 26 KV AC and 750 V DC.
- Perform routine inspection and maintenance of substations and their components, such as switches transformers, diodes, fuses, relays, stationary batteries, chargers, etc.
- Maintain and repair auxiliary power plants, transfer switches and uninterrupted power supplies.
- Maintain and repair low voltage systems, such as security alarms, intercom and public address equipment, etc.
Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
Graduation from a recognized electrician or utility constructor apprenticeship program with current journeyman electrician certificate from the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries is required. Two years of industrial or utility control experience is required. Additional qualifications:
- Experience working with high voltage systems is desired.
- A valid Washington State driver’s license is required.
- A Seattle Fire Department Type FA-1 Fire and Life Safety Certificate are required by the end of the 6 month probationary period.
Supplemental Information
WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed outside in a variety of weather conditions or in confined areas and is exposed to high voltage, as well as working from lift equipment up to 75 feet. This position requires lifting and/or carrying objects up to 100 pounds with assistance. SELECTION PROCESS: Application materials will be screened for qualifications. Reference checks and reviews of driving records will also be conducted prior to any final offer of employment.
