Overview:
The Assistant Chief Engineer is responsible for overseeing all engineering and maintenance operations for our upscale hotel located in San Diego, California. The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader with extensive experience in a luxury or upscale hotel environment, preferably with Marriott brand experience, who can ensure the safety, efficiency, and aesthetic appeal of the entire property. This role reports directly to ownership and a hands-on approach is required to be successful. It requires a commitment to excellence, meticulous attention to detail, and the ability to manage a team and outside contractors effectively.
Key Responsibilities:
Manage all daily maintenance and repair operations, including guest rooms, public areas, and back-of-house facilities. This includes, but isn't limited to, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and refrigeration systems. Develop and implement a comprehensive preventive maintenance program to ensure all equipment and systems are in optimal working condition.
Lead, train, and supervise a team of maintenance engineers. Assign and prioritize work orders, create staff schedules, and conduct performance evaluations. Foster a positive and collaborative work environment focused on high standards and guest satisfaction.
Ensure the property is in full compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations, including OSHA and fire safety codes. Maintain all life safety systems and lead the hotel's emergency response team for facility-related issues. Conduct regular inspections to identify and address potential safety hazards.
Respond to and resolve guest and management maintenance requests promptly and professionally. Maintain the physical appearance of the property's interior and exterior, coordinating with other departments to ensure a seamless and high-quality guest experience.
Requirements & Qualifications:
A minimum of 3-4 years of progressive experience in a hotel engineering leadership role, preferably in an upscale or luxury environment. Marriott brand experience is a strong plus.
Strong technical knowledge of all aspects of building maintenance, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and general repairs. Must have excellent problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
Weekend availability as a core part of the role. This position requires being on-call for emergencies.
This is a salaried position with an annual wage of $70,000 to $75,000, based on experience.
Education:
- Technical training or a 2-year degree in a related field (e.g., Building and Construction, Engineering, Mechanics) is highly preferred.
- Relevant professional certifications (e.g., Certified Pool Operator, VRF HVAC certifications) are a plus.
