Walk through a day in this role
Morning starts on the plant floor in Rialto, CA—reviewing overnight batch data, checking moisture probe calibrations, and confirming the mixer truck rotation plan with Dispatch. By mid-morning, you’re leading a root-cause huddle on a recurring conveyor issue, assigning an electrician and mechanic to validate VFD parameters and inspect gearboxes. After lunch, you’re in the rolling stock shop lining up DOT inspections and DVIR closeouts, making sure the next pour window won’t be disrupted. Before day’s end, you brief regional leadership on uptime trends, PM compliance from the CMMS, and capital priorities like a control system upgrade.
About Thompson Pipe Group – Los Angeles
We’re a privately held family business of engineers, contractors, and manufacturers in Rialto, California, building essential infrastructure through a broad family of concrete solutions.
What you’ll lead
- Plant reliability and uptime for batch systems (batching computers/controls such as Jonel or similar, aggregate bins, conveyors, weigh systems, cement/fly ash silos, and water metering). Diagnose and resolve mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic faults; drive true root-cause analysis instead of symptom fixes; and keep calibrations current for scales, moisture probes, and batching accuracy.
- Preventive maintenance by building and executing a PM program covering the batch plant, mixer trucks, loaders, conveyors, dust collection, and air compressors. Track PM and downtime in the CMMS and maintain critical spares to cut mean time to repair.
- Rolling stock shop oversight across mixer trucks, loaders, forklifts, and mobile/heavy equipment. Own PM scheduling, DOT inspection compliance, and DVIR follow-up; manage diesel, hydraulic, chassis, and drum/mixer system repairs (in-house or vendor supported); track fleet uptime and repair turnaround; optimize shop workflow; manage parts and vendor relationships (tires, hydraulics, drivetrain); and balance labor between shop and plant maintenance teams.
- People leadership for plant mechanics and electricians—set daily priorities, uphold safety and quality, train on batching system troubleshooting, LOTO, and confined space practices, and conduct reviews while supporting hiring and onboarding.
- Safety and compliance through disciplined lockout/tagout, confined space, fall protection, and electrical safety, meeting OSHA, MSHA (as applicable), and company EHS standards. Lead investigations into equipment-related incidents and near misses.
- Projects and capital including scoping and managing minor upgrades (conveyors, silos, controls), coordinating OEMs and contractors, and supporting maintenance capital and operating budgets.
- Cross-functional coordination with Plant Manager, Dispatch, and QC to minimize downtime during peak pour schedules, resolve batching accuracy issues tied to mechanical/electrical causes, and communicate plant condition, downtime trends, and capital needs to regional/national leaders.
Qualifications Required
- 5+ years leading maintenance in ready-mix, aggregate, cement, or heavy industrial manufacturing.
- Hands-on knowledge of batch plant systems: aggregate handling, weigh batching, cement/water metering, and batching control software.
- Proven leadership of a rolling stock or heavy equipment repair shop, including mixer truck fleets (diesel engines, hydraulics, chassis, drum systems).
- Strong troubleshooting across motor controls, VFDs, PLCs (plus), conveyors, gearboxes, pneumatics, and hydraulics.
- Demonstrated on-floor leadership—comfortable coaching and working alongside tradespeople.
- Working knowledge of OSHA and DOT; MSHA exposure a plus if aggregate mining is on site.
- CMMS experience for PM scheduling and downtime tracking across fixed and mobile assets.
