Director of Human Resources and Risk Management - Lumber and Building Materials

Our client is a successful privately-held company that consists of a logging operation, a forestry department, a wholesale division, and multiple retail lumberyards. The company is considered a pioneer in sustainable forestry and has been widely recognized for its strong environmental ethics. This vertically integrated business has been doing business in the Central Coast, Bay Area, and Central Valley for over 70 years. Besides a focus on sustainability they are also a pioneer in technology related to their retail lumberyard businesses. They are a company that seeks to do right by their employees, their business, and their communities.
Due to an upcoming retirement we are looking for a strong Director of HR and Risk Management with strong experience with selecting and implementing policy and programs across a business with several different operations. We are also looking for someone who has experience and a strong understanding of risk management.

- An HR professional with a true “seat at the table” who understands both the needs of the employees and of the business and works to find mutually beneficial solutions
- A strong fact-finder and negotiator with excellent research and writing skills
- A collaborative leader who understands how to work with partners and vendors to achieve the best results for the business
- Strong practical business legal experience related to legal documents, contracts, lawsuits, and working with outside counsel.
- An HR or Risk manager with experience in building materials, lumber, sawmills, forestry, construction, manufacturing, agriculture, 3PL, or LTL trucking.
The Experience We’d Love To See:
- 5+ years experience with wage and hour and other CA employment laws and regulations
- 3+ years of experience at the policy and program selection, implementation, and management level
- Practical understanding of financial statements and accounting practices
- A strong understanding of self-insured programs (working with a broker partner)
- Evaluating risk, researching new programs, negotiating pricing, and implementing and managing programs
- Senior Human Resources Experience at an organization with 150+ employees across multiple locations and types of divisions
- Being bi-lingual (Spanish) would be great, but isn’t required
- Education or Exposure to CA laws as an attorney or paralegal would be a bonus, but isn’t required
- Past experience with recruiting or talent acquisition would be nice, but isn’t required
What You’ll Get To Do:
- Lead the Human Resources / Human Capital efforts for a 200+ person organization with
- Work closely with ownership/leadership with a seat at the table
- Learn about and implement new regulations
- Manage existing policies and programs
- Research and develop new policies and programs
- Work closely with leadership to ensure compensation, benefits, and perks are competitive and still allow the business to be profitable
