Job Summary: The Electrical Construction Estimator is responsible for developing accurate and competitive cost estimates for electrical systems in commercial, industrial, and institutional construction projects. This role requires a deep understanding of electrical construction processes, strong analytical skills, and the ability to work closely with project managers, engineers, and clients to ensure that bids are thorough, competitive, and reflective of the project's scope and specifications.
Key Responsibilities:
- Estimate Development:
- Analyze project plans, specifications, and other documents to prepare detailed cost estimates for electrical work, including labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor costs.
- Develop bid proposals and detailed takeoffs for electrical systems, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
- Identify and evaluate potential risks and opportunities in the bidding process, providing recommendations to the project team.
- Utilize estimating software (e.g., Accubid, Trimble) to develop cost estimates and manage bid data.
- Bid Management:
- Collaborate with the preconstruction team to prepare and submit competitive bids on time.
- Obtain and review quotes from suppliers and subcontractors to ensure that all project components are covered.
- Participate in pre-bid meetings, site visits, and client presentations as needed to clarify project requirements and build relationships.
- Ensure that bids comply with all regulatory requirements and company standards.
- Cost Analysis and Budgeting:
- Analyze historical data, market trends, and current pricing to inform cost estimates and bid strategies.
- Assist project managers in developing project budgets and schedules based on estimated costs and resource availability.
- Monitor ongoing project costs against the original estimate, identifying variances and recommending corrective actions as necessary.
- Collaboration and Communication:
- Work closely with project managers, engineers, and other team members to ensure that estimates align with the overall project scope and objectives.
- Communicate with clients, architects, and engineers to gather additional information or clarify discrepancies in project documents.
- Provide support during project handover to ensure a smooth transition from preconstruction to construction.
- Continuous Improvement:
- Stay updated on industry trends, new technologies, and changes in electrical codes and standards.
- Continuously refine estimating processes and tools to improve accuracy, efficiency, and competitiveness.
- Participate in post-project reviews to evaluate estimate accuracy and identify areas for improvement.
Qualifications:
- Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in electrical estimating, with a focus on commercial, industrial, or institutional projects.
- Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field is preferred.
- Skills:
- Strong knowledge of electrical systems, materials, and construction methods.
- Proficiency in estimating software and Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel).
- Excellent analytical and mathematical skills, with the ability to interpret complex plans and specifications.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams.
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational and time management skills.
- Certifications:
- Professional certifications such as Certified Professional Estimator (CPE) are a plus.
