Seeking an Enthusiastic & Organized Special Education Teacher
Orion Academy is seeking a full-time credentialed Special Education Teacher for the 25–26 school year.
We are a small private high school that specializes in students with neurodiversity. A familiarity with Autism and similar diagnoses is necessary. We provide training in the fundamentals of teaching to students with these learning profiles. These students are much like your average high school students, though they struggle with Executive Functioning (organization, planning, and similar) and social skills. Our students are bright, friendly, and hard-working; many love Orion specifically because it provides a place where they finally feel that they “fit in” around their peers.
This position requires a Special Education Teacher to provide instruction, support, and services to students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other disabilities. The ideal candidate holds a Mild/Moderate credential and an Autism Authorization (an additional credential authorization), a Moderate/Severe credential (Autism Authorization is bundled into the credential), or is willing to obtain the additional Autism authorization credential upon hire. In addition, experience in teaching writing or literature is preferred.
Applicants for this position should have a good understanding of the 9th–12th grade Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts. Courses taught by this position include writing fundamentals, analytical essays, and critical thinking. This position also teaches Personal Projects, a course unique to Orion Academy that teaches important student skills that are often overlooked in regular programs. Students in Personal Projects learn to organize, plan, and complete a long-term, research-based project that culminates in written work and a formal presentation on topics of their choice.
Due to the nature of our students, we offer small class sizes (6–10 students), computers for all students, a predictable class structure, and a quiet, safe place for learning. This, in addition to the highly collaborative nature of our staff, makes an excellent environment for teaching. Applicants who are experienced in educational technology are preferred.
Teachers who are a good fit for Orion are enthusiastic about their subject, highly structured and organized in the classroom, and open to taking on different responsibilities at the school. As a small school, all the teachers take part heavily in managing their classrooms and planning and running our regular events, clubs, trips, and more. We are a very tight-knit community and are looking for applicants that are highly collaborative. Orion is a dog friendly campus and comfort being around dogs is required.
