Under general supervision, the Concrete Finisher is the journey classification who performs a variety of semi-skilled to skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance, or repair of sidewalks, curbs, gutters, catch basins, storm drains, and streets. This position has responsibility for laying out, forming, and finishing concrete construction projects within the street maintenance division; and performs other related duties as required.

Breaks up and removes damaged concrete, removes tree roots, fills and performs grading, repairs sprinkler system layouts, constructs shoring braces, and prepares and replaces all surfaces during project work.
Reads and interprets plans, blueprints, sketches, and specifications; lays out jobs; and sets out concrete forms. Grinds concrete, delivers work project supplies such as basic asphalt, lumber, and related tools and equipment.
Maintains, repairs, catch basins, culverts, and concrete block walls; performs general carpentry, brick work, and color stamping as required for the project.
Spreads and finishes concrete; strips forms, backfills, and otherwise cleans and restores work site.
Operates a variety of equipment and uses various hand tools in the completion of assigned tasks; ensures equipment and tools are maintained in good operating condition and follows established work and safety practices and procedures.
Assists in the performance of other street maintenance tasks. Answers emergency calls as needed and assists other divisions and agencies in taking appropriate action.
Physical, Mental and Environmental Working Conditions: Position requires sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping, and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision when inspecting work and operating assigned equipment. The need to lift, carry, and push tools, equipment, and supplies weighing 50 pounds or more is also required. Additionally, the incumbent in this outdoor position works in all weather conditions, including wet, hot, and cold and in confined spaces. The incumbent may use cleaning and mixing chemicals, which may expose the employee to fumes or airborne particles, and the incumbents may be exposed to mechanical, plumbing, and/or electrical hazards. The nature of the work also requires the incumbent to use power and noise producing tools and equipment, drive motorized vehicles, and often work with constant interruptions. The incumbent may be required to respond to after hours emergency call-outs and perform routine standby duties.

Education and/or Experience: Any combination of education and experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for a Concrete Finisher. A typical way of obtaining the required qualifications is to possess the equivalent of two years of general public works construction and maintenance experience that includes experience in performing concrete construction or repair.
License/Certificate: Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class B California driver's license.
Knowledge of: The methods, techniques, tools, materials, and equipment used in concrete forming and finishing work; basic safety precautions and procedures; traffic laws and rules involved in truck and equipment operations, including traffic control procedures; applicable Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations; methods and techniques of scheduling work assignments; modern office procedures, practices, methods, and equipment, including a computer and applicable software; methods and techniques for record keeping and report preparation; proper English, spelling, and grammar; and occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
Ability to: Perform skilled concrete forming and finishing work; read and interpret plans and specifications; work in the absence of supervision; use hand and power tools such as jackhammer, concrete saw, concrete grinder; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; work safely, independently, and with others; use and care for tools and equipment in a safe and efficient manner; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships; interpret, explain, and apply applicable laws, codes, and regulations; read, interpret, and record data accurately; organize, prioritize, and follow up on work assignments; work independently and as part of a team; make sound decisions within established guidelines; follow written and oral directions; observe safety principles and work in a safe manner; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; and establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Skill to: Safely and effectively operate a variety of equipment, power and hand tools used in standard concrete replacement and repair.
Medical: Applicants will be required as a prerequisite to employment to successfully pass a physical examination, including a drug screen, the cost of which will be paid by the City.
Selection/Exam Process: The person selected will be expected to perform all the functions of the position. Based on a review of the applications and the supplemental applications received, the candidates appearing to be the most qualified and meeting the City's particular needs will be invited to participate in an interview.
