Job Title : Recreation Specialist

Salary Range : $34,818.12 - $50,342.28 per year, commensurate with experience.
This is an entry-level professional position responsible for implementing and overseeing all assigned recreation program areas and facility operations. Areas of responsibility may include, but are not limited to: sports, fitness, aquatics, concession operations, recreation classes, youth and teen programs, cultural activities, enrichment programs and services, special events, facility operations and rentals, market operations, park services, business services, as well as facility management. Direct supervision is provided by a Recreation Supervisor or Recreation Manager but work is performed with considerable independence. Work is reviewed through reports, conferences, and observation of program results.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Implements, supervises, facilitates, and evaluates all assigned recreation program areas.
Oversees and supervises the activities of subordinate staff and volunteers.
Oversees and supervises any assigned contract services.
Assists with facility operations including, but not limited to, program registrations, membership sales, rental contracts, POS systems, building management, security and policy enforcement, and daily deposits.
Assists with customer service including front desk operations, answering phones, facility tours, and handling of any complaints/issues.
Conducts research to identify programs of value and interest to the community; evaluates program effectiveness and viability; makes recommendations on new programs or modifications of existing programs to meet community needs.
Serves as a liaison and resource for community agencies and other organizations; performs community outreach to promote recreational programs and stimulate interest in department offerings. Serves as department representative with external organizations; attends and/or speaks at meetings, community and professional functions, and conferences as assigned.
Prepares marketing materials, such as course descriptions, program brochures, newsletters, and announcements; uses social media and other forums to maximize community outreach and participation.
Develops, implements, and recommends effective maintenance and safety programs, procedures, and guidelines; conducts periodic inspections and ensures program facilities are properly maintained for optimal safety.
Monitors and tracks expenditures and fees collected; monitors inventory, and purchases authorized supplies and equipment.
Assists with department special events and city-sponsored special events as needed.
Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Preferred graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in recreation and parks administration or related field strongly desired; valid Missouri Driver License; experience in organized recreation programs; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:
Knowledge of the philosophy and objectives of organized recreation.
Knowledge of the principles and practices of various recreation specialties.
Knowledge of the principles and methods of recreation program planning, development, and scheduling.
Knowledge of implementation, operation, and scheduling of various adult programs and programs for participants of all ages.
Knowledge of Recreation Software RecTrac, Civic Rec, Internet access, and various computer programs.
Ability to develop and execute a variety of leisure time programs to benefit the community.
Ability to supervise and evaluate the work of subordinate employees and volunteers.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff members and patrons.
Ability to operate a computer and terminal keyboard.
Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
Ability to promote a project and write/produce corresponding press releases, brochures and fliers.
Ability to maintain professional certification through continuing education classes.
Subject to working a varied schedule including some evenings, weekends and holidays
E quipment: Personal computer, associated software, normal office equipment, photo ID equipment, and various security and mechanical systems.
License(s)/Certification(s) Desired: CPR, AED and First Aid certification
